The formation of E.G.L. Worldwide

The late president of E.G.L. Mr. Guy Margel completed his gemological training in the United States in the late 1960’s. In 1973 Mr. Margel opened the first European Gemological Laboratory in Antwerp. The laboratory in New York was opened in 1975 followed by Los Angeles in 1978. E.G.L. South Africa opened in August of 1980 and the laboratories in Paris and London opened in 1981 and 1982. Laboratories opened in Tel Aviv, Seoul, Istanbul in the 90’s,Mumbai in 2003, Delhi in 2004 and Hong Kong in 2008. The services offered by the E.G.L. Laboratories are recognized throughout the world and the company is an integral part of the global diamond industry.

The opening of E.G.L. in August 1980 gave the polished diamond industry a choice of laboratories in South Africa. The acceptance of it's credentials and the grading standards of E.G.L. by the factories and dealers world-wide allowed the company to very quickly become a major supplier of grading services to the industry here in South Africa. Most of the diamonds graded by E.G.L. (South Africa) are either exported or sold to tourists with the confidence that the grading given will meet the standards accepted by the industry world -wide.

E.G.L. DIAMOND GRADING LABORATORY
In 1994 the industry in essence moved to it's current location at the SA Diamond Centre, 240 Commissioner street Johannesburg. E.G.L. South Africa’s Head Office is currently on the 4th floor in suite 410. This facility holds both the E.G.L. grading laboratory and the E.G.L. College of Gemology.
